Mount Pleasant received the 2018 traffic counts this week from the Iowa DOT and the traffic continues to grow in and around our community.
According to Kristi Ray, Executive Vice President of the Mount Pleasant Area Development Commission, “If you are looking for traffic count data, the Iowa DOT traffic group is a great resource”.
Ray noted that more than 35,000 cars travel through Mount Pleasant on any given day which is critical to the economic vitality of the area. Traffic in and around Mount Pleasant saw a 10% growth, approximately 3,500 more cars a day traveled through the community.
There were other important findings in the numbers. Downtown Mount Pleasant continues to be the strongest area of traffic flow in Mount Pleasant with 13,500 vehicles traveling through the Main Street Mount Pleasant district. Other areas of growth include Grand Avenue from Mapleleaf to Winfield Avenue which had an increase of more than 1,000 cars a day. Ray attributes this to the strong retail and service businesses in that area.
One intersection that had a decrease in traffic was the Washington and Iris intersection. But this is actually good news as the City of Mount Pleasant made improvements to Winfield Avenue in an effort to relieve some of the semi-traffic from the Crossroads Industrial Park. Numbers increased on the west side of town which saw a steady increase of traffic due to the growth of the manufacturing base in that area.
